How Daytrana Works

Your Child Is Unique and Their ADHD Medicine Can Be, Too

Two things make Daytrana® special. The most obvious is that, unlike other ADHD medications, it's a patch, not an oral medication. But what really sets Daytrana apart is its flexibility—because it's removable.

Put It On When They Need It. Take It Off When They Don't. Once-Daily.*

Not every day is the same, so Daytrana offers customizable wear times. It's a long-acting medicine that can also be shorter-acting if removed earlier than the recommended 9-hour wear time. If your child's usual school day starts at 8 AM, you can apply the patch while they're in bed at 6 AM. This gives the patch the 2 hours it needs to start working. Then, after school, it can be taken off. Important: the Daytrana patch shouldn't be worn longer than 9 hours. Daytrana works for 2 to 3 hours after taking it off, when worn for 4 to 9 hours, respectively. So your child should still receive the benefits of Daytrana for a few more hours while free to play with friends, enjoy afterschool activities, do homework—whatever the day brings.

On weekends if your child sleeps late or if you just want to medicate your child less—you can put the patch on later and remove it earlier than 9 hours. You also have the option of removing the patch earlier on any day to help manage potential late-day side effects such as decreased appetite or trouble sleeping. With a full 9-hour wear time, about 26% of children and adolescents experienced some loss of appetite while 13% of children and 6% of adolescents experienced some trouble sleeping. Before you adjust your child's treatment, be sure to talk it over with your doctor.

How Daytrana Works

Another unique feature of the Daytrana patch is that when it's applied to the hip, it delivers medicine through the skin into the bloodstream. This means Daytrana is not processed through the stomach. The benefits of this are:

  • Whether your child's stomach is empty or full, food is not expected to affect absorption into skin
  • Daytrana releases medicine through the skin into the blood. Benefits continue for up to 2 to 3 hours after removal when the patch is worn for 4 to 9 hours, respectively
    • Removing Daytrana earlier than 9 hours will result in falling blood levels that may help manage late-day side effects such as loss of appetite or trouble sleeping

*Daytrana should only be used once a day and worn for no more than 9 hours.
